Intoxicating Ingredients: What You Should Know About Sake

Rows of Sake Bottles

Chances are you’ve tried Sake at one point or another, a staple at most Japanese restaurants. The Japanese rice wine is made from fermenting polished rice to remove the bran and is brewed in a process not dissimilar to that of beer. No matter how familiar you are with Sake, we’d be willing to wager that you probably haven’t tried it in your skincare. In honor of our upcoming line of Sake infused skincare, Sake Blossoms, we’re breaking down everything there is to love about Sake. Read on to learn why we’re obsessed with this skin loving ingredient.

It Brightens Your Skin

Dark spots got you down? During the Sake brewing process, a compound called kojic acid is produced. As a natural skin brightener, kojic acid works its magic on hyperpigmentation, melasma, acne scarring and other dark spots caused by sun damage, hormones, or over zealous skin picking. Compared to its somewhat controversial counterpart, hydroquinone (a staple ingredient in many “skin lightening” products) the kojic acid found in Sake is a naturally derived alternative and is said to be more gentle and suitable for the most sensitive of skins. Its budding brightening properties make Sake infused skincare a must have for anyone looking for more even toned, radiant looking skin.

It’s Hydrating

Skin feeling a little parched? Then Sake studded skincare is for you. Sake contains Prolin and Glutamic Acid, amino acids that are known to condition and hydrate the skin – making for a baby soft complexion from the inside out. Even better, Sake supplies a long term solution to dry, flaky skin by enhancing your skin’s ability to retain moisture over time. This means that oilier skin types can enjoy a complexion that’s more balanced as skin won’t overproduce oil to compensate for lacking hydration, while drier skins will be able to make the most of the hydration they’re given, giving you a plump and hydrated complexion no matter your skin type.

It’s Antibacterial

Thanks to its natural antibacterial properties, Sake infused products work wonders on blemish prone and oily skin types. Known to instantly soothe angry, inflamed skin and tone down acne associated redness, Sake infused skincare will calm the most irritable of skins. What’s more, the ingredients’ astringent qualities make it a popular addition to pore purifying products as they help clear and minimize the appearance of pores, and treat and prevent congestion in pesky t-zone areas that can lead to breakouts and oil slicked skin. So whether you’re blemish prone or not, your skin will love the clarifying properties of Sake-infused products.

It’s Exfoliating

As a by product of the fermentation process, Sake is loadedwith natural enzymes full of alpha hydroxy and beta hydroxy acids (AHA’s and BHA’s) that exfoliate the uppermost layer of skin, sloughing off dead skin cells that can cause congestion and dull skin. As opposed to the harsh physical exfoliation provided by coarse scrubs, sake’s natural enzymes work to chemically exfoliate skin through all-natural biochemical processes – meaning no more microtears in the skin. The enzymes in Sake eat away at dull, dry skin and leave your complexion looking luminous and smooth- a look we can all get behind. Cheers!
