Today is Earth Day, and we are celebrating this good cause! At this point, most of us are well aware of how everyday pollutants negatively impact our environment. And if you’re like us, you’re already doing your part to help reduce the damage (biking to work, using less plastic, composting, creating less waste). While we applaud your efforts, we want you to know that the environment isn’t the only thing being impacted by pollution – your skin is too!
When everyday pollutants like smog, fuel emissions, and smoke penetrate the skin, they cause inflammation, dryness, and contribute to the loss of your skin’s of collagen, all in the form of free radicals. We hear the term “free-radicals” all the time and why they’re bad for you – so what are they? Put simply, free-radicals are highly volatile molecules with unpaired electrons. These pesky scoundrels cause acne, redness, and other forms of inflammation, while damaging existing collagen. Free-radical damage can also lead to dark spots, premature skin aging, and can even mutate skin cells, causing skin cancer.

If not, we urge you to drive to the nearest drug store, or search online, to find an effective mineral based formula with protection no less than SPF 30. Creating a barrier on your skin against pollutants such as cigarette smoke, CO2 and ozone is very important if you want to avoid the signs of premature aging, fine lines and dullness. Adding sunscreen daily to your antioxidant-packed morning skincare regimen could help fight the effects pollution has on the skin. The next must-do to prevent free-radical damage? Meet environmental pollutants with a hefty dose of antioxidants. We like making dark chocolate covered strawberries with coconut sugar and having them with a glass of red wine. They are a great way to give yourself a boost of antioxidants while unwinding from a long day.
